What Shall I Do When I Grow Up?
Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we were born knowing what we were meant to do with our lives? To bound out of bed just filled with excitement, ready to get on with our day?
To love something so much that we’d lose ourselves in our work? To lose all sense of time?
Maybe you’ve struggled with knowing what you were meant to do. I have. It hasn’t come easy for me. I’m sharing with you a page from one of my journals. It’s from a few years back, but you may see a glimpse of yourself, your own struggle, in the letter.
My Dear Maker:
What shall I do when I grow up? What is it you’d have me do?
Shall I type for others? For me?
How about writing? Shall I write articles? Letters? Books?
Shall I own a bookstore? A restaurant? A coffee shop?
Shall I work with animals? How about senior citizens, hmmm?
Or, maybe I’ll create and sell beautiful gift baskets, and use the proceeds to buy goats for those little kids in third-world countries. They’ll have fresh milk to drink then. And cheese to eat. And, they can trade a kid goat now and then for poultry… Then they’ll have eggs to fill their little bellies, too. And, maybe they can trade their eggs for something they need, as well…
Won’t you tell me? What is it I should be doing?
Love,
Dar
