Creative Ideas Journal: Mother’s Day
Mother’s Day. A wonderful way to honor moms, and let them know how very special they are! It’s a time of celebration, with lots to do…
And I’d like to add one more (small) thing to your Mother’s Day to-do list. (Don’t worry, it’s a fun one.)
While you’re preparing to celebrate this special day, I’d like you to view it from another lense…
But, first, let’s look at what goes into making a Mother’s Day so special.
There’s…
- - mom, along with the family gathering
- meal planning (main courses, desserts, drinks, etc.)
- cakes and other desserts from the bakery (or homemade)
- greeting cards
- gifts
- party items
- (add your own items here)
Now, viewing this from your new lense, see if there’s a spot in there for you to carve yourself a small niche.
For example…
If you’re a scrapbooker:
- Can you see a market in putting together special albums or scrapbooks for moms?
- Can you see providing a profile sheet to mom’s grown kids so you could tailor the album or scrapbook around those things mom loves and enjoys? Things like her hobbies, her career, her family, her travel memoirs?
- How about making lovely, personalized gifts — and getting paid to create them for family members who don’t have the ‘knack?’
If you have a flair for words:
Maybe you’ve read some of the Mother’s Day cards out there. Some are excellent, with meaningful messages. Others are not so great — and maybe you’ve even thought, “I could do better than that!”
- Have you looked into submitting your own writing to a place like Hallmark?
- Did you know they have about 800 artists, designers, stylists, writers, editors, and photographers? And more than 19,000 new and redesigned greeting cards and related products each year?
- Can you see yourself becoming a part of all that creativity, perhaps as a freelancer?
If you’re a baker/designer at heart:
- Do you love baking and/or designing cakes or pastries? Why not consider specializing or putting your own special touch on some baked goods.
- Is there something special you love to create?
- How could you carve out your own niche with it?
No, you likely won’t get rich from once-a-year holidays. But here’s where you get to brainstorm. From a tiny gem of an idea, consider all the holidays, special occasions or events that might create a need for your services and/or products.
Use this Mother’s Day as a springboard for new ideas. Jot them in your journal — and keep brainstorming.
Sometimes all it takes is one small idea. That one idea may lead to the next – and from there you can run with it.
If you could use some help brainstorming for ideas, be sure you’ve subscribed to the FR*EE Changing Course newsletter. It’s all about finding work you can love — work that feeds your soul. . .
Now, don’t forget to share any ideas you come up with in the Comments area below. Let’s brainstorm!
Wishing you a warm and Happy Mother’s Day!

Dar,
Thank you for all the wonderful suggestions. It sparked me to make candles for the ‘moms’ in my life, and package them in pretty bags. I wrote a card that said, “Your light shines on the paths of others, Thank you for illuminating mine!”

Great job, Cee! (And have you thought about writing for Hallmark?)
If you happened to take a photo of any of them, let me know (or post it in the Comments section here) so we can share them with everyone here. (I love seeing creativity in action.)
You’re an inspiration, Cee! I’ll bet you received some awesome compliments when you presented your gifts?
